Behind the scenes

by Laura Burger

I propped open the door between our offices and studios the other day, so I could hear our vocal artists rehearsing. Yep, that’s a perk of working here: free live entertainment. Except, it wasn’t all that entertaining in that moment.

Say what?

You see, they were working on a particular phrase of the same song. Over and over. For at least half an hour. I could not hear the collaborative conversation that transpired during the silences, I could just hear that section of music when they picked it up again. But when they ultimately sang the entire song, it sounded terrific.

This is the kind of nitty gritty workmanship that makes our product exceptional. In other words, it is the rehearsal and repetition, the careful crafting of each piece of music, that makes everything our artists put out there of the highest quality.

We have all witnessed superior athletes and entertaining performers who amaze us with their skills. The prep work for successful athletes involves hours of physical training, repeated practices, and careful maintenance of good health. The prep work for performers involves repeated rehearsals of whatever they are presenting, so they can relax and entertain with ease when it’s show time. Often you will hear it said of these individuals that, “They make it look easy.”

What task do you make look easy? What do you work on diligently behind the scenes to produce a successful result for others to see? Finishing a dissertation, caring for the aged, knocking out that report, driving a school bus, handling a plumbing emergency, working the assembly line, parenting? Congratulate yourself today for your attentiveness behind the scenes, for grinding through difficult tasks, for persevering during tough times, and for accomplishing tedious, thankless activities in order to present a polished outcome.

When you are out enjoying a Heartland Sings Art-V™ concert this summer, know that it is the committed prep work our artists put in that make it look—and sound—so easy.
