Canto de Corazón es un coro comunitario de habla hispana dedicado a compartir la herencia cultural hispana y desarrollar habilidades lingüísticas (tanto en español como en inglés). El coro está abierto a todos, independientemente de su raza, religión, política o habilidades musicales y lingüísticas. A través de la música, el coro trabaja para construir una comunidad de aprecio, aceptación y respeto mutuo.

Canto de Corazón is a Spanish-Language Community Choir dedicated to sharing Hispanic cultural heritage and building language skills (both Spanish and English). The choir is open to all regardless of race, religion, politics, or musical and language skills. Through music, the choir works to build a community of appreciation, acceptance, and mutual respect.

Alejandra Sandoval-Montañez es una mezzosoprano, maestra y creadora de contenido mexicoamericana. Actualmente se desempeña como artista principal en Heartland Sings. Este año actuó con OPERA Today! en la producción de Amahl and the Night Visitors y espera con emoción regresar para interpretar el papel principal en la producción de la compañía de Dido and Eneas. Su trayectoria escénica incluye papeles como Maggie en The Gift of the Magi, Alisa en Lucia di Lammermoor, Mrs. Segstrom/Desiree Armfeldt en A Little Night Music, Edith en Pirates of Penzance y Lady Angela en Patience. Asimismo, presentó el recital a dúo "Songs of Immigration | A Journey Begins" como parte de la serie Plymouth Music Series. Posee una maestría en Interpretación y Literatura Vocal de la Universidad de Illinois en Urbana-Champaign. Alejandra está comprometida a fomentar la excelencia artística y crear un mundo musical más inclusivo y equitativo.

Alejandra Sandoval-Montañez is a Mexican-American mezzo-soprano, teaching artist, and content creator. She is currently a Principal Artist at Heartland Sings. This year she performed with OPERA Today! in their production of Amahl and the Night Visitors and she is excited to return as the titular character in the company's production of Dido and Aeneas. Alejandra's stage credits include Maggie in The Gift of the Magi, Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, Mrs.Segstrom/Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, Edith in Pirates of Penzance, and Lady Angela in Patience. Alejandra also presented a duo recital, "Songs of Immigration | A Journey Begins," as part of the Plymouth Music Series. She holds a Master's in Vocal Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Alejandra is committed to fostering artistic excellence and creating a more inclusive and equitable music world.

El maestro Robert Nance ("Bob") es un músico polifacético que mantiene una agenda muy activa como director, teclista, profesor, compositor y defensor de las artes. Graduado distinguido de la Escuela de Música de la Universidad DePauw (Indiana) y del Conservatorio Peabody (Baltimore), Nance es presidente y director artístico fundador de Heartland Sings, Inc., una compañía de artistas vocales y conjuntos profesionales fundada en 1997. También es director de música en la Iglesia Congregacional Plymouth de Fort Wayne, se desempeña como músico colaborador de Temple Achduth Vesholom y es pianista en vivo habitual en The Bradley Hotel. El maestro Nance ha hecho de Fort Wayne su hogar desde 1990, donde se ha distinguido como un intérprete y profesor dedicado, así como un líder comunitario capaz y defensor de las artes. Maestro Robert Nance (“Bob”) is a multi-talented musician who maintains a lively schedule as conductor, keyboardist, teacher, composer, and arts advocate. A distinguished graduate of DePauw University School of Music (Indiana) and the Peabody Conservatory (Baltimore), Nance is the President and Founding Artistic Director of Heartland Sings, Inc., a company of professional vocal artists and ensembles founded in 1997. He is also the Director of Music at Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Wayne, serves as a collaborative musician for Temple Achduth Vesholom, and is a regular live pianist at The Bradley Hotel. Maestro Nance has made Fort Wayne his home since 1990, where he has distinguished himself as a dedicated performer and teacher, as well as a capable community leader and arts advocate. In honor of his commitment to the arts, in 2017 he was awarded “Artist of the Year” by Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne.

José Manuel (“Cote”) Godoy, músico y educador, nació en Santiago de Chile, donde a los 5 años comenzó su camino con la música. Cote ha recibido reconocimiento nacional por su composición y fue pionero del Movimiento de Micrófono Abierto de artes comunitarias en Santiago de Chile. Estudió desarrollo musical en la Universidad de Humanidades de Chile, así como pedagogía Waldorf y educación terapéutica. Patrocinado por el Departamento de Educación y Cultura de Chile, Cote brindó clínicas interdisciplinarias que combinaban academia y artes en colegios y universidades de los EE. UU. Su trabajo como coordinador de programas de música para niños en la capital y en el extranjero lo ha llevado a una exploración y estudio más profundo de una variedad de enfoques pedagógicos holísticos. Además, como músico profesional y artista curativo para adultos y niños en el hospital regional más grande del noreste de Indiana, Cote conoce de primera mano el poder de la música para fortalecer y curar. Cote cree que la música es el lenguaje de la posibilidad y aporta una amplia gama de experiencia y un corazón dedicado al trabajo con niños.

José Manuel (“Cote”) Godoy, musician and educator, was born in Santiago de Chile, where at 5 years old, he began his journey with music. Cote has received national recognition for his songwriting and pioneered the community arts Open Microphone Movement in Santiago de Chile. He studied music development at the University of Humanities in Chile, as well as Waldorf pedagogy and therapeutic education. Sponsored by the Chilean Department of Education and Culture, Cote provided interdisciplinary clinics combining academia and arts to colleges and universities in the U.S.A. His work as coordinator of children’s music programs in the capital city and abroad has led to a deeper exploration and study of a variety of holistic pedagogical approaches. Additionally, as a professional Musician and Healing Artist for adults and children at NE Indiana's largest regional hospital, Cote knows first-hand the power of music in strengthening and healing. Cote believes that music is the language of possibility and brings a broad range of experience and a dedicated heart to working with children.

Melisa McCann, originaria de Munster, Indiana, obtuvo su licenciatura en interpretación de teatro musical en la Universidad de Indiana, en Bloomington. Como artista profesional, Melisa ha actuado en numerosos conjuntos musicales, coros, teatros y proyectos de grabación en Nueva York y Chicago, además de haber sido una orgullosa integrante del Coro de la Filarmónica de Fort Wayne (FW Philharmonic Chorus). En 2016, fundó la banda de música latina "Melisa’s Latin Beat". En 2023, cofundó el coro comunitario Canto de Corazón, dedicado a celebrar la herencia latina e hispana. Es parte de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Fort Wayne y ha formado parte de las juntas directivas de Fort Wayne Ballet, Heartland Sings Inc. y la Fundación Honeywell. En marzo de 2025 asumió el cargo de Directora de Relaciones Comerciales en STAR 88.3; allí se adentra en el mundo de los medios y la industria musical, impulsando un mensaje de esperanza y ánimo en todo el noreste de Indiana. Es madre orgullosa de dos adolescentes, Nick y Melodie, y está felizmente casada con el Dr. Patrick McCann.

Melisa McCann, originally from Munster, IN, received a BA in musical theatre performance from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. As a professional musician, Melisa has performed in numerous musical ensembles, choruses, theatrical venues, choirs, and recording projects in New York City and Chicago and has been a proud member of the FW Philharmonic Chorus. In 2016 she launched the Latin dance band “Melisa’s Latin Beat". In 2023, Melisa co-founded the Canto de Corazón community choir, celebrating Latino/Hispanic heritage. She is a proud member of the Fort Wayne Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Board of Trustees for the Fort Wayne Ballet, Heartland Sings Inc., and the Honeywell Foundation. In March 2025 she took the position of Director of Business Relations for STAR 88.3, where she now enters the world of media and the music business, empowering the message of hope and encouragement throughout Northeast Indiana. She is a proud mother of two teens, Nick and Melodie, and happily married to her husband, Dr. Patrick McCann.
Cómo empezó Canto de Corazón/How Canto de Corazón got started
El Dr. Wagner Pastor, ex cantante principal de Heartland Sings, inició Canto de Corazón bajo los auspicios de Heartland Sings, con el apoyo adicional de la Iglesia Congregacional de Plymouth y la YMCA. Cuando Wagner se mudó a Fort Wayne, se sorprendió al conocer a más ecuatorianos en un año en Indiana que los que había conocido en los otros cinco estados en los que vivió anteriormente. La diversidad que experimentó en los Estados Unidos fue enorme y todos los que conoció compartían el mismo sueño de trabajar duro y llevar una vida plena. Un día, Wagner escuchó música en español que provenía de la casa de al lado. Cuando salió de la casa, vio a siete personas trabajando en un techo y cantando a voz en cuello. Pensó: "Me encantaría cantar con ellos", y se le ocurrió la idea de ofrecer una oportunidad para que la gente cantara en el idioma con el que él creció. La idea también era proporcionar un lugar para aprender y mejorar el idioma a través de la música. Wagner creía que todos tenemos la capacidad de compartir nuestra cultura a través de las artes y necesitamos un coro de herencia hispana en Fort Wayne. Así nació el Coro Comunitario Canto de Corazón.
Dr. Wagner Pastor, formerly a principal vocal artist at Heartland Sings, started Canto de Corazón under the auspices of Heartland Sings, with additional support from Plymouth Congregational Church and the YMCA. When Wagner moved to Fort Wayne, he was surprised to meet more Ecuadorian people in a year in Indiana than he had met in the five other states he had lived previously. The diversity he experienced in the United States was vast and everyone he met shared the same dream about working hard and leading a fulfilling life. One day, Wagner heard music in Spanish coming from the house next door. When he came out of the house, he saw seven people working on a roof and singing in full voice. He thought, “I would love to sing with them,” and got the idea to offer an opportunity for people to sing in the language he grew up with. The idea also was to provide a place to learn and improve language through music. Wagner believed we all have the ability to share our culture through the arts and we need a hispanic heritage choir in Fort Wayne. Thus was born Canto de Corazón Community Choir.
